Places to Visit in Ankara: A Practical Guide

Türkiye’s capital combines republican history, museums, old-town streets and everyday city life in Çankaya. This guide groups stops for a first visit. Suggested itineraries are flexible: adapt them to opening hours, road conditions and your interests.

Anıtkabir: start with republican history

Plan a dedicated stop at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Allow time for the Atatürk and War of Independence Museum within the complex. Check official visiting hours, security and entry arrangements before travelling.

Ankara Castle and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

Combine the streets around Ankara Castle with the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, a major stop for Anatolian archaeology. Expect sloping, narrow streets around the castle. Wear comfortable shoes and consider parking in a suitable car park before exploring on foot.

Hamamönü: historic streets and a break

Hamamönü’s restored houses and traditional streets suit a slower walking visit, with crafts, cafés and cultural stops. Consider adding it after time around Ulus and the castle.

Tunalı Hilmi, Kuğulu Park and Çankaya

Explore Tunalı Hilmi Avenue and Kuğulu Park on foot in Kavaklıdere, with time for cafés and restaurants. Add the Atakule area to your Çankaya itinerary if you wish, checking viewing-area access and tickets before visiting.

Lake Eymir: an outdoor break

Consider Lake Eymir for a quieter break. Plan walking or cycling around the weather and check current entry, parking, vehicle and bicycle access rules. Do not assume unrestricted access around the lake by rental car.

A suggested one-day Ankara itinerary

Begin at Anıtkabir in the morning, then choose the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and castle area for the afternoon. Finish with dinner around Tunalı Hilmi and Kavaklıdere. Reduce other stops if you want more museum time; this is our suggested itinerary.

How to split a two-day visit

Spend the first day around Anıtkabir, Ulus, the museum and castle; use the second for Hamamönü and Çankaya. If outdoor time is a priority, substitute Lake Eymir for part of day two. Choose nearby stops instead of trying to cover every attraction.

Practical advice for exploring by rental car

Allow for traffic and parking in the centre, combining driving with walks in historic areas. Plan around the 250 km daily allowance and TRY 100/km excess charge. Request separate quotes for airport delivery, office collection or private chauffeur transport.
